Moving on After a Break Up

Although the pain and hurt fade with time, moving on after a break up can still take courage. For me it was difficult. I saw my break up with Michael coming from miles away. We had been unhappy for some time. However, when it happened I still felt incredibly sad. I had been in a relationship for the better part of my adult life. Learning how to live life as a single woman was not going to be easy for me.

The first thing I learnt is that there is no moving on after a break up until you accept that the relationship is over.  This means admitting to yourself that there is no chance that you will reunite.  This is especially hard if deep down in your heart getting back with your ex is the thing you want more than anything else.

You have to be able to imagine yourself happy again. For me this was difficult, not because I didn’t think I could be happy, I just didn’t know how to do this as a single person. Moving on after a break up meant that I would have to. All of my best memories were shared with partners. I had to learn how to be happy alone.

I didn’t work all of this out on my own of course. I read a lot about relationships and moving on after a break up to learn this. The best way to do this is by reading ebooks written specifically about love. Don’t spend a lot of money, under $50 is fine. You probably wont believe it now, but many relationships follow similar patterns when they end.

Moving on after a break up is made easier with the support of friends and family. If you need help, don’t be afraid to ask for it. I took every opportunity I could to go out and be social. This help in two ways; firstly I wasn’t at home feeling sorry for myself and secondly I was able to imagine my life as a single woman.

Getting out of the house a lot helped me meet new people. I also got to pursue some of my own interests. I took a photography class and even learnt how to cook Mexican food. It was great fun and I now have a whole heap of friends I met along the way. I really helped me with moving on after a break up.

You have to make the conscious decision yourself to claim your life back after a long term relationship ends. It wont just magically happen on its own. You need to have a lot of courage to start your life again. Moving on after a break up is not easy, but the hard work will start paying off.

A year after my break up and I am happier than ever. Moving on after a break up was the best thing I ever did. I’m not ready to start seeing anyone yet, but I am loving life. I hope that you can find your inner strength and be able to do the same thing.
