Coping with a Break Up

For me, coping with a break up was the hardest thing I ever had to do. Breaking up with Natalie was tough. We were childhood sweethearts, she was the only girl I have ever dated and I seriously thought that one day we would get married. One day she sat down and said we had grown apart. She didn’t want to be with me any more.

I bought some ebooks online in the hope of finding a way to make Natalie love me again. These books didn’t cost a lot of money, they were mostly priced between $15 and $50. They all offered great advice on relationships. They helped me to see the patterns of my relationship that caused it to fail. A part of coping with a break up is understanding what went wrong. Natalie and I didn’t have a lot in common. I think the reason that we stayed together was simply because we didn’t know what else to do.

There are plenty of good reasons to be sad when you are coping with a break up. All of the shared dreams and hopes for the future you had together are gone. I found breaking up especially hard, I had not been single since I was a teenager. I had no idea how to live my life without Natalie. What I did learn though was that all of my feelings were valid. People feel many different things when dealing with a break up. They may be sad, exhausted, relieved or fatigued just to name a few.

The first piece of advice of got for coping with a break up was to give myself a break. It can be overwhelming to deal with, and having unrealistic expectations of yourself can make matters worse. I asked my boss for some time off which helped as my work was slipping. I made sure I looked after myself, eating right and looking after my appearance.

Sometimes it can be difficult but asking for help when you need it is important. I felt really alone, when I confided this in my sister she told me about a similar experience she went through. It made me feel better to know I was not the only one that struggled when it came to coping with a break up. Different people will need help in different ways. You may just need a friend to lean on, or you may need help around the house. Don’t be afraid to ask for it.

Allowing yourself to feel sad it a normal part of coping with a break up. Being able to keep a positive attitude is also important. Sadness and depression can have a snowball effect, acknowledge your loss but try not to get lost in it. Be grateful for the positive things in your life.

Keeping a diary is a good way to get in touch with the way you are feeling. Writing down your thoughts can help to clarify what you are feeling. Being in control is a good way of coping with a break up. For some people talking to family and friends can be just as helpful.

With the information I learnt about relationships coping with a break up was much easier for me. I am now on the road to recovery. My life feels normal again. I look forward to meeting a great girl in the future and finding much happiness.
